School Triathlon

The day started off with a buzz. People were listening attentively to Mr Barclay’s announcements preparing themselves for the event. The Year 6s got called up to put their bikes and gear into transition then nervously lined up at the start line.

About half the class had helmets and footwear on and the other half didn’t. You could see the determination as they jostled for places at the front. Mr Barclay hooted and they were off. The crowd soon separated into bunches, Tessa, Reif and Will taking the lead round the second corner. Tessa pulled in front... and she was off! 1st   lap done and Tessa was still in the lead having lost the boys by one corner.

Finishing the 3rd and lucky last lap Tessa sprinted into transition followed closely by Reif and Will. Will was in and out of transition neck and neck with Tessa running their bikes, Reif was on their tails.

Will had trouble getting on his bike giving Reif and Tessa a head start. Soon Will caught up at the hill and zoomed off. Tessa had trouble getting up the hill and got passed by Reif. The rest of the class were up and running nearing the hill on their bikes. It was a constant battle between Will and Reif in the 2 laps of the bike, each one having their chance in the lead.

Tessa wasn’t far behind them as they entered the transition once again. Reif had trouble getting ready and Will was already zooming off to the pool. Wait… there was Reif sprinting across the concrete trying desperately to catch Will up. A few seconds later Tessa is gone, following Reif.

By the time Tessa got there she was one length behind Reif. Frances and Lauren had entered the same lane as Tessa who was doing a slow breastroke. Will was on the last length with Reif another length behind.

Will was out and ran to the finish line… half way there Reif exited the pool area and sprinted off after him. Meanwhile in the pool Dhylan passed Tessa on their last length but Tessa switched to freestyle and ended up right behind him. They both get out at the same time; it was up to the sprint. Tessa got a burst of speed and crossed the finish line just ahead of Dhylan. The rest of the class streamed in after. The end results were…

2013 Haumoana School Triathlon

 and Bike Wise Month Activities
Monday 11th February
Dear parents/caregivers

Year 4, 5 and 6 children will be involved in cycling activities as part of Bike Wise month and our fitness and physical education programmes. These will take place Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday during Weeks 3 & 4.  Please check bikes and ensure that your child has a working and safe bicycle for these days.  All cycling takes place on school grounds.
These fitness activities include a Triathlon on Wednesday 20th February (1.30 – 3.00 pm). Order of the legs are Run, Bike, and Swim (flutter boards are optional for the less confident swimmers). The children will compete in Year groups and the distances concerned are easily achievable by all the children in the senior syndicate.  This event is designed to enable all children to attain success by completing the 3 disciplines, as well as enabling some to be competitive with their peers.

For the triathlon children will need to bring:

  • Togs
  • A bike (in good working order)
  • Helmet
  • Shoes (compulsory on the bike)
Parents and family members are welcome to come along to support the children.

New Website

Term 1 Newsletter - hard copy out today.

Room 6 Newsletter Term 1 2013
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back to Room 6 for 2013.  The children have quickly settled back into Room 6 and many have volunteered for some of the extra responsibilities that they have as seniors.  Unfortunately, the e-learning component has not been set up yet but the process is underway.

The school theme for Term 1 is “Our Place – Our Way’ where we will be looking at what makes our school, our community and parts of the Hawke’s Bay environment such a special place.

We start the year with Skills for Growing and move on to learning about our area.  There will be a strong focus on literacy and numeracy this term as well as formal testing such as PATs and Probe.
The ‘Habits’ that we will be focusing on this term are Thinking Interdependently, Listening with Empathy and Taking Responsible Risks.

Dates of upcoming events will be posted on the class blog - rm6haumoana.blogspot.co.nz - and/or via class newsletter.  A new re-vitalised blog - child designed should be online in the first few weeks.
Camp
I have been investigating options for the class camp but have not finalised details yet.  It will take place towards the end of the year.  As soon as I have dates I will advise you so you can plan ahead.

Homework
Homework will consist of:
Reading – daily – to be recorded in the Reading Log.

Spelling – weekly – 10 words either topic or level based or from their writing.
Maths – number knowledge from the School Number Ladder.

There will be additional activities at times throughout the year.  At this stage the class is involved with a free online site – www.studyladder.co.nz - where I have set activities at 3 levels.  The children have been encouraged to ask for different levels or activities if they do not meet their needs.  This site also has a ‘pay component’ that we will not be using.
Communication is important to me and if you have any concerns or queries, email me or pop into class to arrange a time for discussion.
Regards
David Barclay

Bike Wise

For those who missed the article in the paper . . .

Four Haumoana School pupils who completed a 40km leg of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge last year are encouraging others to dust off their bicycles.
Bike Wise Month is a national initiative which promotes cycling as a healthy, fun and safe way to travel, throughout February.
The motivated group of Hawke's Bay boys already have those practices in place, after being encouraged by their teacher, David Barclay, to take up cycling about 1 years ago.
"They are young and see me cycling and enjoying it, which makes them want to try it," Mr Barclay said "It gives you a sense of achievement when you reach your destination - getting in a car is so easy but biking is more rewarding."
Ten-year-olds Will Tidswell, Wesley Akeripa and twin brothers Noah and George Barr all cycle to school and often spend weekends riding together. "I was enthused by my teacher and I like to do my best at sports," Will said.
"We did train (for the Taupo Cycle Challenge) quite a lot so we had an idea of what we were in for."
The group attended organised training sessions on Thursdays, Sundays and during their holidays to build up fitness and endurance.
"It's good, because we push each other," Wesley added.
For Noah the exciting thing about cycling was completing a challenge, while his brother, George, found biking uphill relaxing.
"When we bike to school it's about 5km if we are on our road bikes or 3km on our mountain bikes," George said. "We have both."
The group hoped to compete in the Taupo Cycle Challenge again this year.
