WHAT WE LEARNED AT THE FARADAY CENTRE

Faraday Centre
Barney: It was cool. I learned about the ultra violet light.

Will: I learnt that the sun is highest in the sky at 12.00pm in the summer.

Mya: I learnt that heat comes in different colours and the colour red means we have a bit of heat but purple is the worst because it has heaps of heat.

Matthew: I learnt that……convex makes you look smaller and concave makes you look bigger.

Caleb: I learnt that in Summer there’s no light in the house and in Winter there is!

Zavanah: I learnt that you have a shadow when light bounces off your hand. I learnt that not all the colours are in the rainbow.

Aimee & Reif: We learnt that concave mirrors make you look upside down but convex ones make you look the right way up.

Oscar: Convex lenses makes things look smaller.

Reid: it was great fun; I learnt that concave mirrors make you look upside down and bigger.

Jazae: I learnt that the deep sea cave had ultra violet light in it.

Laura & Noah: We learnt that red, blue and green light makes white light.

Grace & Sophie: I learnt that ultra violet light is invisible so it makes white glow.

George: I learnt that blue and green makes turquoise.

Aidan: I learnt that the sun is the highest in Summer.

Wiremu: I had a great time and I learnt that red, blue and green make white.

Soccer Results

On Saturday the 26th May Haumoana Hotshots played the Havelock North Blazers at Akina Park. It was freezing cold. In the first half we scored 2 goals, by Noah and Will.

At half time our coach Adam said we need to up our game. George our goalkeeper swapped with Lars.

In the second half Lars let in 2 goals but they were both offside so they should not have been goals. Anyway we scored 4 of our own goals.

At the end of the game the score was 6 – 2 to the Haumoana Hotshots. Player of the day was Will for great midfield play.

Orienteering Championships – Individual
Haumoana children top the podium again and Room 6 mixes it with the seniors

No 1 Tessa - Rm 6
Different faces, same places!  For the 3rd year in succession Haumoana boys finished first (Sam W) and second (Will) in the HB Individual Orienteering Championships.  Not to be outdone, this year the girls matched the boy’s performance with Tessa B taking out top spot and Siena finishing second (Siena has been a podium finisher forthe last 3 years) .
While Haumoana dominated in the number of entrants as well as the top results, it was pleasing to see the consistently improving performances of all children who participated, particularly Year 5 students - George, Aidan, James and Oscar - who will be real contenders next year.
No 2 Will - Rm 6

It is not an easy task searching unknown countryside for controls, armed only with a map and your wits, especially when you are between 8 and 10 years old!

It was a wonderful display of risk taking, persistence and fitness.

What ideas can you come up with to compete in this year's competiton?

Monday, May 21, 2012

There was a fantastic turnout from Haumoana students at the HBOC event held in Te Awanga on Sunday morning. It was really satisfying to see the improvement in confidence from all children, resulting in some significant time gains and placings. Being a local event, ex-students featured in the top 10 making the Haumoana School overall results even more pleasing.

Mr Consistency - Will T - finished in a podium place for the 3rd time in 4 events (6th has been his worst result) but is still searching for the win. Sam W from Room 4 took out the win.

Year 4 students - Lily , Jack , Cameron and Phoebe are also showing great potential.

The HB School Championships are next weekend. This event is an individual event but is also contributes points in a competition between schools in which we have placed or won in each of the last 3 years so all results are important.

Start times and directions will be sent home later this week.

Technology Challenge

Winners are grinners!

Maddie, Madisyn, Zavanah and ... produced an impresssive structure.
Supplied with newspaper, iceblock sticks, straws and tape, Room 6 students had to design and build a device to move a ping pong ball over a 1m high wall, 1m away.  A real challenge but they were up to it, creating some impressive machines! The next step is to see if they can improve them further.

Soccer Success...again!

4 from 4 with an impressive goal difference!
Congratulations to the Haumoana 10th Grade team as they took on, and defeated the Havelock North team.  Player of the Day goalkeeper George Barr was peppered with shots in the first half but managed to keep Havelock scoreless! It was a most impressive display of teamwork with a very slick attack in the second half wearing down the opposition to win 4-nil!

Pettigrew Green Arena

What a fanatastic opportunity - experiencing 5 different sports with skilled coaches!
Futsal, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball and Squash all provided different challenges with an unofficial Room 6 survey showing that futsal was the most popular.

LIGHT @ the Faraday Centre

"I know the answer!"
Room 6 Attended the Faraday Centre for an informative, 'hands on' look at the properties of light. Unfortunately the camera wasn't cooperating. More learning thoughts to follow later.

Soccer [Rm 6]

Haumoana vs Masonvale Girls

Haumoana’s kick off gave them time to hatch a plan. The girls were too sharp and managed to get the ball. Haumoana was off to a bad start. After Haumoana’s season so far, all wins, this was a much more challenging team. Working together they managed to score a goal, just breaking through the defence line. After that their hopes had soared, soon they were in there again. The girls had proved to be a fast team and increased their attack. Thanks to James, Haumoana had a good defence and didn’t let the ball through once; James also managed to kick the ball to Haumoanas strikers. Just before half time Haumoana scored another goal making the score to 2-0.

Half time gave Haumoana a time to build up their strength.  Their coach Tom had seen better plays and made sure they stepped up their level. With oranges and water, including an energy tablet they got ready to go out.

The 2nd half started of great with a goal in the first 5 minutes. The girls had seemed to have got tired and soon let 3 more goals slip in. Haumoana increased their attack and got through once again scoring through the unfortunate goalie. The girls swapped over their goalie but it did no good Haumoana had got to powerful. When the final whistle blew the score had ended up becoming 10>0 to Haumoana.

Haumoana was once again victorious!

Congratulations to Frances Rainbow - Player of the Day

SOCCER!

Saturday 5th May

Masonvale vs Haumoana Hotshots in soccer, who would win? Haumoana had a great start, because soon they had 3 goals scored by Will and Lars.  Finally Masonvale pulled themselves together and improved their defence, but still no goals came.

Soon it was past half time and the two teams were ready to play again.  By then George the Haumoana goal keeper had swapped with Noah. Haumoana had difficulty getting goals because the Masonvale goalie had been changed to a more advanced one.  Finally things started coming to Haumoana, 2 goals scored by Aidan gave way.  Suddenly the whistle blew.  Haumoana were happy to win 5-0.  James got player of the day.  What a game!

Haumoana Hawks [ Room 6]

Netball Team

On Thursday 4th of May 2012 the Haumoana Hawks faced Poritt for their first match of the season of netball. They played at Onekawa netball courts. The game started off well with the Hawks scoring the first goal. Poritt soon caught up tying the score to 1 all. The Hawks did some good intercepting and soon got the ball down their end   of the court, to score yet another goal.

Quarter time happened and their spirits were raised with the pep talk.  Their good work continued and they got 2 more goals before half time. But Poritt raised their score to 3.  Once the whistle had blown it was half time with Haumoana leading 4- 3.

Once the other half had started they were back in the game but Poritt had increased their attack and defence. Haumoana was finding it hard to break through their defence. With great skill Haumoana pulled through to score their final goal just before the whistle blew for the last time.

 Haumoana had done it again!!!!

Victory was theirs!!!
